Landscaping, irrigation and drainage in Iowa Colony, TX

Few places in greater Houston have grown like Iowa Colony. Master-planned communities such as Meridiana and Sierra Vista have put thousands of new homes along the SH 288 corridor, and the landscaping work here looks different from anywhere else on our map: it is mostly first-time installation rather than renovation.

A new-build yard starts from a particular place. The lot was graded for construction, there is a thin layer of topsoil over compacted clay, the builder sod covers the front and often not much else, and the back yard is a blank rectangle. What it needs is a plan — beds with shape, plants chosen for full sun on an unshaded lot, sod that is actually going to root, an irrigation system sized to the whole yard rather than just the front, and a hard look at where water sits after the first big storm.

We do all of that as one project, which is the cheaper way to do it. Trenching for irrigation and drainage before the beds and sod go in beats digging the finished yard up six months later.

Iowa Colony specifics

What we see in Iowa Colony yards

  • Thin topsoil over compacted clay

New-construction lots are compacted by the equipment that built the house. Soil prep and bed building are what let new plantings establish.

  • Builder grading that holds water

Pad grading protects the slab; it does not always drain the yard. Low corners and standing water behind new houses are extremely common here.

  • Full-sun back yards

With no mature trees, these lots take the full load of a Texas summer. Plant choice and irrigation coverage have to account for it.

  • Do it in one pass

Irrigation lines, drainage, hardscape base and planting beds all want to go in before the sod. Sequencing saves real money on a new-build yard.
